... encarcerated in the Tower of London. When the guards came to take him to the place of execution, he was playing chess at the time. The pieces were heavy and made good missile weapons. Apparently the condemned took out one man with the king, and second with the queen and a third with a bishop by the time they got him.
Can't recall who the chappy was, offhand...
Chess is a rough game all right...

A tribute to Vassily Smyslov — Vassily Smyslov, the seventh world chess champion, died of heart failure in Moscow on March 27, three days after his 89th birthday. He was one of the greatest stars when the Soviet Union dominated chess. Smyslov enjoyed a long chess career, stretching from his days as a teenage master to occasional appearances in his late 70s.
